A brief theology of why we pray

  1. God created a universe to display the glory of his grace.
  2. So all should act in a way that draws attention to this glory.
  3. The obedience and service of God's people is most glorifying when they are most dependent on his grace.
  4. Praying for God's help is perhaps the key way God preserves and maintains the dependence of his people on this grace and power.
  5. When the Spirit prompts and directs our prayer, the ultimate purpose of the universe is therefore fulfilled. God is glorified for his grace: the Father for initiating his reconciling work, the Son for purchasing it, and the Spirit for leading us to benefit from it.
